Wildlife Photography Days

With Dave Rolfe

Wildlife is probably the most challenging subject for photographers. Invariably the subject is erratic and elusive, but pursuing this precious image is what makes it so fun and rewarding.

Dave Rolfe will be your guide through the day to provide tuition and to help you improve your camera skills whilst the setting at Port Lympne Reserve and Howletts Wild Animal Park will provide outstanding opportunities for you to capture ‘wild’ photographs of the residents of our world renowned animal park.

Example Itinerary – Port Lympne Reserve

  • 09.00

Tea and Coffee along with a Health and Safety introduction at Basecamp

  • 09.30

Take a specially constructed open-sided Land Rover to enable you to get that right shot. Travel through the African Experience Safari stopping at every available opportunity to photograph Zebra or Wildebeest grazing quietly, watched intently by rhino, giraffes, and ostrich to name a few

  • 12.00

Arrive at the greatest of the apes enclosure; The Western Lowland Gorillas, where the now famous Ambam the walking gorilla resides

  • 12.30

Stop for lunch at Basecamp (lunch not included)

  • 13.30

Walk through Primate Trail to see the black and white Colobus monkeys, baboons & tapirs which are always popular

  • 14.30

A visit to the Palace of the Apes – another favorite

  • 15.30

A visit to the tigers at the top of the park marks the end of the day when you are free to roam around the other enclosures until the park closes

Example Itinerary – Howletts Wild Animal Park

  • 09.00

Tea and coffee and Health and Safety briefing in the Education centre

  • 09.30

See the black rhino beyond the first barrier for a clearer and closer shot

  • 10.00

Move on and get a Big cat close up, followed by an opportunity to meet the gorillas and a quick visit to see the tapirs before lunch

  • 12.30

    Stop for lunch (not included)

  • 13.30

Monkey business – take photos within the enclosure to get closer, clearer pictures

  • 14.00

Travel on a tractor/trailer to view antelope and deer in the Deer Park, and then head off to the elephants

  • 15.30

Walking with Lemurs marks the end of the day, when you are free to roam around until the park closes

Times and animal encounters are subject to change due to the nature of being an outside experience and working with animals.

Testimonials

Some recent comments about the workshop

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you, Dave Rolfe, for making our Red Letter Day so enjoyable. Dave is very knowledgeable about photography, the animals and The efforts of the wildlife park. He also a very amenable person. We really enjoyed his company as well as the unique perspective we got of the animals at the Park.

I just wanted to write and say what a fantastic day I had yesterday on the Photography Day at Howletts. Dave was very welcoming and immediately put us at ease. His knowledge of cameras and photography is amazing and he passes this on in a quiet, unassuming manner. He has a wealth of information about the Park, the animals, the keepers, the conservation projects and the parks’ history as well as the Aspinall family.

My wildlife photography workshops make a great Birthday or Christmas present. Come along and spend the day getting up close to some of the World’s most endangered species and let me teach you how to capture those ‘one off’ shots with the expertise I have gained over many years of this type of photography.

About

Born in Folkestone, Kent, David and his wife continue to live in the town. Most of his adult life was spent running his own local business and he took up photography as a hobby over 30 years ago. Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Parks are fairly close to home and David’s inspiration from the outset was wild animal photography.
